The panel titled “Water Management and Nature-Based Solutions in Local Governments,” organized by the Bornova Municipality Coordination Department, was held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Dramalılar Mansion. With contributions from Yuva Association, the event brought together academics, experts, and local stakeholders to evaluate proposed solutions to the water crisis exacerbated by the climate crisis.
Delivering the opening speech of the panel, Erdem Vardar, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yuva Association, emphasized that most of the water used in Turkey is still consumed for agricultural irrigation, drawing attention to the importance of nature-based solutions for retaining rainwater in the soil. Vardar underscored that Bornova and its surroundings are increasingly at risk of drought, stating that small-scale water retention efforts in rural areas both reduce flood risk and increase ecosystem resilience. Sharing Yuvar Association’s educational and practical experience in this field, Vardar also announced a new information platform called susuzlugacozumlar.org during the panel.
At the event, Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Coşkun Hepcan discussed the feasibility of nature-based solutions in cities and water retention approaches. Prof. Dr. Şerafettin Aşık shared his insights on proper water management, agricultural irrigation methods, and water efficiency in the context of climate change. Emra Rona presented examples of rainwater harvesting and the effects of water retention structures in rural areas.
The panel concluded with a question-and-answer session aimed at evaluating pilot studies that could be implemented specifically in Bornova and strengthening information sharing among local actors.
